galleryDK Closing

June17

After 2+ years of being open on Queen Street West, the owners of galleryDK have decided to close the doors on the storefront gallery. In the last 2 years, the non-gallery priorities for the owners have changed quite dramatically (children born, homes bought, and other major life milestones).

And to a no small extent, we have found it increasingly difficult to actually remain photographers ourselves! Something had to give… and that something is our storefront space. Going forward, galleryDK will be an online only gallery.

While we had hoped that we could transition the space into a larger membership-based gallery, there doesn’t appear to be enough demand for the model to make it work. While we are disappointed that we couldn’t keep the sticky door open longer, we’re happy with what we have achieved with the space.

Thank you to all of the many artists who have exhibited with us (too many to list), and thank you very much to all of the friends and supporters of the gallery who have visited us and attended opening receptions (and such). Thanks for your support of local emerging artists!

Between now and the end of June we will be sporadically open (hopefully at least a couple times a week). If you’re in the neighbourhood, please be sure to stop by and say hi.

Your Comment:

I am a real estate agent and a photographer, blending the two passions into what you see here. Selling condos and lofts, I am very cognizant of the pace of development in Toronto. I love seeing the conversion of an old factory or warehouse into lofts – even more when I see the same joy in the face of a client viewing such a unit.

Our world is filled with structures, some forgotten and others well-loved. What stories do these buildings have to tell… what scenes have those stones witnessed? Why is the human race so obsessed with erecting these monuments made of metal and brick – and why do they so carelessly abandon them when they are no longer needed?

These are some of the questions I like to address in my photography. I lived for many years in a small town north of Toronto and saw many old farms left to rot. It was these old barns and silos that originally piqued my interest in the decayed. Now exploring the urban landscape, my goal is to bring the documentary power of my camera to the hidden areas of cities everywhere.

Co-founder and member of the DK Photo Group and co-owner of galleryDK – this vision has taken me to new heights. The work of the DKPG and myself was recognized by Bravo!TV in a 6-show series “photoXplorers” that ran from November 5th through December 10th, 2009

I am immensely proud to announce that I was elected to the both the Ontario Society of Artists, as well as the Society of Canadian Artists, in 2009. This sort of recognition by my peers is a very major honour.
