galleryDK Closing

After 2+ years of being open on Queen Street West, the owners of galleryDK have decided to close the doors on the storefront gallery. In the last 2 years, the non-gallery priorities for the owners have changed quite dramatically (children born, homes bought, and other major life milestones).

galleryDK is closing

And to a no small extent, we have found it increasingly difficult to actually remain photographers ourselves! Something had to give… and that something is our storefront space. Going forward, galleryDK will be an online only gallery.

While we had hoped that we could transition the space into a larger membership-based gallery, there doesn’t appear to be enough demand for the model to make it work. While we are disappointed that we couldn’t keep the sticky door open longer, we’re happy with what we have achieved with the space.

Thank you to all of the many artists who have exhibited with us (too many to list), and thank you very much to all of the friends and supporters of the gallery who have visited us and attended opening receptions (and such). Thanks for your support of local emerging artists!

Between now and the end of June we will be sporadically open (hopefully at least a couple times a week). If you’re in the neighbourhood, please be sure to stop by and say hi.

Brand New Website

I guess it is pretty obvious, I have made some major changes to the site. I got tired of hand-coding a static site and decided to move to the WordPress Platform. I can keep all of my original content, plus it makes updating and adding to the site so much easier.

This version is pretty fun so far, maybe a little garish for fun. But heck, I am in the business of creativity, why not be expressive?

Society of Canadian Artists

I have also now been elected to the Society of Canadian Artists. Both the OSA and now the SCA, it does make one feel good, to be recognized by one’s peers.

The Society of Canadian Artists (SCA) is a national, non-profit artists’ organization dedicated to promoting the visibility and stature of the visual arts. SCA has representation in all of the visual arts media.

In 1957, a group of Toronto artists created the Society of Co-operative Artists. The SCA broadened its vision from local to national in 1972 when it received its charter and non-profit status and became the Society of Canadian Artists.

The SCA is committed to strengthening its national presence in Canada by promoting excellence in traditional forms of artistic expression, and by encouraging acceptance and growth of contemporary and experimental forms of visual art.

Ontario Society of Artists

I just found out I got elected to the Ontario Society of Artists! That is pretty cool, they are the oldest artist society in the country.

Founded in 1872, the Ontario Society of Artists is Canada’s longest continuing art society. They are a professional association for visual artists living and working across the Province. Their mandate is to foster and promote the visual arts through exhibitions, publications and arts advocacy. Each year they present exhibitions of works by members, and a juried art exhibition open to all artists working in two and three dimensional media.

This opens up a whole new area of exhibitions for me.

galleryDK Sign

Thanks to the great folks at the Parkdale BIA, galleryDK now has a new sign. As part of Operation Storefront, they are giving us a face lift. Cleaning and painting the front, new tiles and the sign. Now we look a lot less ghettolicious than when we opened!
